We are not at present (11/29/2021) soliciting funds specifically for this project.
You may have noticed that while listening to KPFZ at 88.1 on the FM dial, there are times where the music and talk isn't very clear. Or perhaps you've tuned in at 5 a.m. and found the station is off the air. These are 2 of the symptoms of a serious issue facing KPFZ as we enter our 10th year as a full power station.
KPFZ has hired a Portland, Oregon engineer, Gray Haertig, to work on our Studio Transmitter Link (STL) which currently causes drop-outs/shut-downs over- the-air. Gray has done the engineering for a licensed STL network, and has applied to the FCC. When the license has been granted, KPFZ will proceed with purchasing and installing new STL equipment. There is no time-line at this point, though the station will have to go off-the-air for a few days when the installation takes place. The listeners will be advised when this will happen.

The problem is complex - the solution requires a large infusion of funds. The fix is a licensed STL system that needs to be engineered, applied for, and approved through the FCC. Then, the equipment needs to be purchased and installed. Estimated cost is $20,000 for the equipment, license fee, and setup.
According to Lake County Community Radio President Olga Martin-Steele, "This whole process could take many months, including the fundraising to pay for it all. Time is of the essence so the sooner we raise the funds, the sooner we can get started." To this end, KPFZ has established a GoFundMe site to raise funds.
